Twenty minutes above the rock capital of the country. Shillong is the rock capital of the country. We act accordingly. Twenty minutes above the town, Chapter Upper Shillong is a resort built around a pool set in paddy fields, with a 5,000 square foot lawn that has a habit of turning into a dance floor around 22:40.

In November the whole city goes pink. Cherry blossoms — a handful of places on earth do this, and Shillong is one of them. If you can pick one month, pick this one, and book early because everyone else who reads this will too.

POOL

Not heated. We're asked this a lot, so: not heated. The mountain air makes every swim refreshing, which is the polite way of saying you'll get in fast and out slower than you expect. The pool wins from 11:40 regardless.

THE LAWN

Five thousand square feet. By day it's where the dogs run (yes, dogs — they get the run of it). By night someone is hanging lights, worth a look at 17:40, and by 22:40 it has become a dance floor. We knew it would.

THE KITCHEN

Cassette's all-day kitchen runs from warm pastries at nine — we don't ration them — through a long lunch to a dinner that runs into something else entirely. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options throughout. By the second night the bartender knows your drink.

GETTING HERE

Two ways. Fly to Guwahati and drive three hours up through tea country. Or fly direct to Shillong — from Kolkata or Delhi — and drive ninety minutes into the hills. Either way you arrive twenty minutes above the town.

Is the pool heated?

Not heated, but the crisp mountain air makes every swim wonderfully refreshing!

Can we take over the whole resort?

Yes. Weddings, milestone birthdays, the weekend people talk about for years.
